“Ohioans in Space” Youth Discovery Day
On January 24, WC Middle Schoolers joined other students, astronauts, and state legislators at the Ohio Statehouse as part of a day-long celebration around the unveiling of a large-scale 9×12 foot painting titled “Ohioans in Space” by artist Bill Hinsch. The approximately 100-pound painting is housed in a 450-pound frame and was unveiled on Wednesday.
The piece is the first commissioned large-scale painting to be installed permanently in the Ohio Statehouse in 66 years. The last painting to be placed in the rotunda was of Wilbur and Orville Wright, unveiled in 1959.
The unveiling of the mural took place at a gala yesterday evening, but the day leading up to the gala boasted a full itinerary of events celebrating aviation and aerospace science, including a student program in the afternoon called “Ohioans in Space Youth Discovery Day.”
Our Middle School students traveled to the Statehouse to attend the student program in partnership with COSI and other Ohio science centers from all over Ohio. Three NASA astronauts from Ohio were also in attendance, participating in interactive experiments and meeting students.
